Advice on buying barbecue: Which grill should I buy?

I kept being asked about buying barbecue.

"Which grill should I really buy?"

So I decided to write a small introductory guide on the topic of advice on buying barbecue. If you already have your dream barbecue, check out the report on recommended barbecue accessories. First of all: I can't answer the question of which grill you should buy, as there are grills of all possible shapes, colors and sizes. First, buyers of grills must answer a few important questions for themselves:

Grill buying guide

What budget is available?

You should definitely set a budget. Problems with the problem: I know from my experience that the budget will quickly increase if you deal with different types of grills. The desire increases rapidly. Perhaps th

e grill should be larger? But be careful, baking alone isn't everything. Depending on what you plan to do with the grill, you will also need accessories such as barbecue grips, protective gloves, chimneys, thermometers, etc.
You can spend tons of money on barbecue parties. There are ceramic grills for 1500 euros. There is a luxury grill for 5000 euros. There is a premium gas grill for 10,000 euros. However, in this article, I am devoting myself to the normal "entry level class" for aspiring grillers, or those who want to become one.

Gas, coal or even electricity?

This is primarily a question of baking philosophy. I am primarily a charcoal grill and I always grill with charcoal. It's a traditional barbecue, that's what I like. Just have a bit of smoking and smoking. I like the characteristic charcoal smell and the smell of meat. You can only do this really well with charcoal.
But meanwhile, a gas grill has moved into my outside kitchen

and I also appreciate the advantages of a gas grill. Gas grills are ready for use at the push of a button, heat them quickly and produce little smoke. For quick steaks and quick fries, the gas grill is definitely a great thing. It takes 20-30 minutes to bake coal to the temperature and get ready to bake. On the other hand, gas cookers are more likely to fail, as the technology is significantly more installed and cleaning the 6 burner gas grill is often more complicated than cleaning the charcoal grill.
If you live in a rented apartment and only have a balcony, only allow gas or electric grill. You should definitely read the house rules and ask your landlord if you're not sure which grill you can use.

What do I mainly bake? Directly or indirectly?

When grilling directly, the food is placed directly on the embers. If you mainly grill and typical German food: put on your stomach, neck and sausages, then direct grill is really enough. All you need is an open grill without a lid. If you want to bake something more sophisticated and want to step into the world of baked goods, you definitely need a grill with a lid. Indirect baking usually cooks food at low to medium temperatures (100-180 degrees C). A grill kettle is ideal for this. There, the baked food is compensated above the heat source. The molten air around the food is baked and allows an even cooking process. In a kettle, you can of course bake well at medium to high temperatures

My three basic rules for choosing a barbecue:

1. Not too big!
2. If you buy cheap, you buy twice!
3. Griddle surface can only be replaced with further grilling surface!

It sounds strange, but it's true. If you want to buy a kettle, stay away from small balls. A grill with 47 cm is usually too small, it quickly becomes too hot, it is difficult to follow the rules and - especially with indirect baking - you simply have too few baking areas. Even if you only bake for 2 people: a grill with a diameter of 57 cm must be easy. Everything else is just a bad compromise and you'll regret it sooner or later.

Advice to buy baked goods

Now we come to my recommendation. Can you imagine: since I've mentioned the grill kettle many times, this is also my first suggestion. Weber is a market leader in this field. I also found my way into the world of indirect baking with the 57 Weber grill. You can get the special 57-cm Weber Master-Touch GBS version for around 280 euros,

This has useful extras like the One One Touch cleaning system, meaning you don't even get your fingers dirty. hands when discarding it. Ashes are simply pushed into the ashes through the wing cross and you can simply throw the ashes into the trash. In addition, it has a foldable lid and grill thermometer, so you can easily add charcoal during operation without removing the grill. Grill with  BBQ System (GBS).

The grill has one removable insert that can be exchanged for other required pieces. For example, there is a Sear Grate cast iron rack, a frying pan, a frying pan or a pizza stone. A great system, well thought out, not cheap, but making the grill kettle a factory. overview.

There are also cheaper Weber grills, but they have significantly less equipment. I definitely recommend the 57S Master-Touch GBS in the Special Edition as it has many features that make baking easier and, in my opinion, essential. As one of the few grills, it has a stainless steel grill (many other grills only have chrome grills).
